Transmetropolitan: Gouge Away
Published in Paperback by DC Comics (February, 2002)
Authors: Warren Ellis, Darick Robertson, and Rodney Ramos
Average review score:

Gonzo Journalism Redux
Spider Jerusalem is Hunter Thompson channeled for a new generation. This series is such fun to read because even though it is set in the future it clearly comments on the state of our world today. Ellis is a new kind of Gonzo Journalist and Spider is his voice.

Ellis comments on everything from politics to love to war to constant [chemical] use and drinking. All of the Transmetropolitan books are like a visual reinterpretation of Hunter Thompson's work and bring its crash through the door of [weak], comfortable people who just thought Hunter was a character played by Johnny Depp. Anyone whoever read and enjoyed Thompson's work should shovel all of the Transmet novels into their heads immediately and love it!

A new sense of focus
This TPB is a little bit lighter than the extremely dark volumes that came before it -- Spider shakes off his depression and resumes the fight against the exploitative powers that be with new vigor. The absurd (rather than purely black) humor of the early volumes returns, particularly in the hilarious first issue of this volume, in which Spider's life is parodied in a variety of genres... Ellis' comic writing is at its peak here.

As always, however, the comedy and vulgarity are tempered by a genuinely disturbing dystopian vision of a modern Western democracy gone subtly totalitarian. Among the comics being written today, _Transmetropolitan_ is nearly unique in its skillful satirical handling of serious issues.

The plot thickens.....
Thats the best way to describe this trade paperback. In this story arc, Spider grapples with the fact that his overexposure has made him a cartoon of sorts. He decides it's time to step up with war with The Smiler, a.k.a. President Gary Callahan. I cant reveal much more, except that it's a pivotal point in the overall Transmet story. If you read the series, you must pick this up. If you don't, START, then get this one. If you cant read learn. Yes I am ranting, but it's that damn good.

Traveler's Companion Philippines, 2nd

Even better than what is taught in school @^:^@
Very high Quality book. The chapter entitled "The Country and Its People" is an excellent account and analyses of our Philippine history. Even better than what is taught in school here. You will be ready to appreciate my country during your visit. It contains many, many beautiful color pictures on high quality paper. I would read this book before I left & take the latest edition of the Lonely Planet Guide with me.

Great travel book
The Philippines tourism bureau should distribute free copies of this book, because it really does a good job of showing off the country in all its glory. I recently spent a lot of time looking at various travel books to research a trip to Palawan/El Nido, and this was the only book that I felt covered the topic adequately. Besides the great text, the book is packed with beautiful pictures!

a treasure in a travel book
I just finished reading the chapter entitled "The Country and Its People" in Traveler's Philippines Companion. I consider it to be one of the best, if not the very best, accounts and analyses of the history of a nation that I've ever read. My wife, who is Filipino, said it is easily superior in breadth and depth to what she learned in school. Impressively, it accomplishes this in a most succinct fashion. I never expected to find such a treasure in a travel book. I now feel much enlightened on the subject and therefore well primed to appreciate the country I'm about to visit.

A Widow's Might
Published in Hardcover by Magnolia Mansions Press (15 September, 1999)
Author: Carolyn Ellis Lipscomb
Average review score:

What a Story
A Widow's Might is a remarkable story about a remarkable lady. We need more role models especially in today's world. The hardships this woman went through show that faith, determination, and dedication can still win over the greatest obstacles.

Inspiring and caring story
The Ellis' family story demonstrates the value and strength of love, dedication to family and perseverance. It is an inspiration to see these traits rewarded. This story would make a wonderful movie!

A wonderful Southern story where love ultimately triumphs
The story of A Widow's Might gives us all a glimpse of the dynamics of a small Southern town and its inhabitants. As in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, there are characters, good, bad and "different". This story is a love story, in a most unconvential sense. If you enjoy a sweet short read and an ample helping of Southern hospitality, or, if you are an AuburnUniversity alum, you will certainly want to add this little book to your library. Well done, Mrs. Lipscomb, well done!

Annalee and the Lawman (Harlequin Super Romance, No 963)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (January, 1901)
Author: Lyn Ellis
Average review score:

INTENSELY REWARDING!
Deputy Ben Ravenswood is still dealing with his guilt and a surprising attraction to Annalee Evans, the witch of Rain Mountain. Set in the mountains of Georgia.

Annalee Evans, with her two Dobermans, [and lots of money] pace her property on Rain Mountain. She doesn't intend to let anyone invade her space. Until a pregnant teenager, Theresa show up.
The commonality of threat by a bad man to the unborn child helps to slowly bond Annalee and Theresa.

Annalee has survived for five years on her Mountain using peoples own prejudices and suspicions to fend off their natural nosiness and defend her solitude. Until Ben breaks through.

Intriguing twists to the story and the final results will keep you interested until the end.
Highly Recommended --M

one of romance's brightest stars
Deputy Ben Ravenswood heads to the top of Rain Mountain, ignoring all the trespassing and keep out signs that turn more and more threatening closer to the acme. Ben wants to approach Annalee Evans as a friend, but she refuses any involvement with anyone human including those from nearby Dalton Falls. Annalee's only friends are two Dobermans, Diva and Hunter. Anyone insane enough to ignore these two bodyguards would have to think twice of facing the crazy woman and her double-barreled shotgun.

Ben informs Annalee that a teen disappeared into the nearby woods. Annalee, the witch of Rain Mountain, denies spotting anyone. The missing girl reminds Annalee of her self, running away from a bad person. The pregnant Theresa Smith manages to reach Annalee's property. Fulton County, Georgia has a bench warrant ordering Ms. Smith to testify in a drug case. She refuses to return. To help Theresa, Annalee knows she needs to open her heart to Ben and the frightened adolescent. However, once opened, Ben and Theresa steal Annalee's heart so that there is no turning back.

ANNALEE AND THE LAWMAN is an exciting romantic suspense novel that seems on first brush, in this shrinking Internet world, impossible for anyone in America to remain isolated. However, the novel works because Lyn Ellis turns her three lead players into real people. The reader believes that Annalee fled the world, Ben has the guts to keep trying to reach her and Theresa is ready to vanish into nowhere land. Ms. Ellis keeps her entertaining tale filled with tension that will please sub-genre fans. This author will be one of romance's brightest stars.

The Art & Science of Rational Eating
Published in Paperback by Barricade Books (November, 1992)
Authors: Albert Ellis, Michael Abrams, and Lidia Dengelegi
Average review score:

A classic
I recently picked up a copy of this book because of my interest in the work of Ellis. Apparently Abrams and Dengelegi are terrific researchers. They have added alot of clearly presented biological research to the work. Excellent.

Well researched book on the psychology of eating
Although not a "diet" book per se this is the best in that category. Rather than provide the right way to eat, it demonstrates through extensive research that body weight is the result of a complex interplay of biological and behavioral factors. The authors first seek to teach self-acceptance, then the rational-emotive/cognitive behavioral methods to maximize self-regulation. The case vignettes presented throughout the book both add to its entertainment value and its applicability

Between Race and Ethnicity: Cape Verdean American Immigrants, 1860-1965 (Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Centennial)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Illinois Pr (Pro Ref) (September, 1993)
Author: Marilyn Halter
Average review score:

Very Impressive Research book
I think this book is definetly a good research piece. I am the 2nd generation of Cape Verdeans living here in the U.S. Unfortunetly my parents did not speak the language to us. The author made herself very knowledgable regarding our culture, struggles and thoughts through generations. My father told us how my grandfather worked on a whaling ship going back and forth from Cape Verde to the U.S. til he bought property on Cape Cod, which I continue to tell my children and nieces and nephews and they are also proud of that. The author mentions interviewing some Cape Verdeans on the Cape where some of them have last names of relatives of mine....what great lengths this author has gone with this research to get accurate data, I am very impressed. I now say I am African-American rather than the black Portuguese which I was taught from my Grandmother, however since I am fair complexed I do tell people that I am Cape Verdean American when asked what am I...complextion was another issue brought up in this book which we are very familiar with. GREAT JOB!!! I was very please to read about my culture...One day I hope I do get to visit the Cape Verde Islands.

the most accurate and comprehensive writing to date !
I have read just about every piece on this subject. This bookis definitely the best researched piece to date. It refers to peopleplaces and things that I am quite familiar with. I am Third GenerationCape Verdean living here in the U.S. I have traveled to the Cape Verde Islands and I speak the language fluently. Ms. Halter... captured the very essence of this culture by detailing specific facts such as: differences in Island to Island, language accents, living conditions, resources, cultural celebrations, etc. I am quite familiar with many of the characters in her book and her research references. She speaks of the history and culture just as I have heard about it from my grandmother and grandfather. I have read other writings that I feel do not compare, simply because they are not as clear and complete as Ms. Halter's book. Her book covers the many facets of this very complex nationality in a way that is more simple to understand than any other book on this subject that I have read. This is highly important to someone who not in the least educated in this culture. I have shared my knowledge of this subject to hundreds of people along my path... END

The Bone Garden: A Wesley Peterson Crime Novel
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Dunne Books (July, 2003)
Author: Kate Ellis
Average review score:

Best yet in this series
I was so pleased to see this new book by Kate Ellis and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed both mysteries in this one. The supporting characters were all interesting and original and I got a huge charge out of the mother-in-law. I hope Kate Ellis keeps going with this series because I've enjoyed all of the books. I think this book is the best so far. I think my teenage daughter would enjoy this series too.

A superb British police procedural
Restoration has begun on the gardens of the seventeenth century Earlasacre country house in Devon. However, the digging turns macabre when the excavation team uncovers the remains of a woman interred three centuries ago. Not long afterward more human remains are found. The archaeologists begin putting together the grisly account of what happened at this locale during the initial construction of the gardens.

Trinidad Detective Sergeant Wesley Petersen would prefer to work on the historical mystery. However, he soon has a modern day who-done-it to contend with when a solicitor dies during a tea break at a cricket match. As Wesley and other police investigate the present-day homicide, patterns form that links the current death with those of the past, but who is the culprit today remains the question.

With several archeological mysteries already investigated by the hero, one would think this series would grow staler than some of the remains encountered in these books. Instead, Kate Ellis makes each new tale different and quite fresh with the two common themes being Peterson and duality of who-done-its in the past and present. THE BONE GARDEN is a superb British police procedural with both eras' mysteries well done and gripping even as the historical sub-plot opens up each chapter with a strong sequence followed by a powerful modern day string. Ms. Ellis will please fans of both sub-genres with her latest DS Peterson novel.

Celebrate life!
This book was a Godsend to me as I completed chemotherapy for breast cancer 4 years ago. This book touches on all the issues faced by cancer survivors on several levels - emotional, social, legal, etc. Only a cancer survivor knows what it is like to be a member of this special club of ours - a club whose members share the same renewed vision of life. The road to that renewed vision is not an easy one, and this book will help pave the way! I can't believe that it is out of print! My life has been enriched because of it. Thank you, Susan and Judith!

republish this book!
You thought getting your cancer cured took care of the matter? Dream on. There are a lot of issues in survivorhood. Your dates drop you, your insurance company drops you, your employer eases you out, your family doesn't want to hear about it anymore, and your adrenaline surges with every cough, twinge and hiccup that your now untrustworthy body produces. Here are some people who understand. Fellow survivors Nessim and Ellis walk you through every issue, offering sound advice and words of encouragement. Their chapter on the insurance obstacle is excellent. You might take a mind to joining one of the Cancervive chapters, if there is one in your area, or availing yourself of their over-the-phone counseling.

Will appeal to: survivors and their family and friends.

Christ and the Future in New Testament History (Novum Testamentum, Supplements, Vol 97)
Published in Hardcover by Brill Academic Publishers (October, 1999)
Author: E. Earle Ellis
Average review score:

A Landmark in New Testament Studies
In Christ and the Future in NT History, professor Ellis brings under scrutiny some of the most controversial areas in NT studies. The two major sections of his book, dealing with christology and eschatology, collect Ellis's previously published articles on a number of highly disputed issues among NT scholars, such as: the perennial question of the historical Jesus, Christ's use of the Old Testament, the christology of John, Jesus and the resurrection, the intermediate state and the final destiny of the wicked, Pauline anthropology, and prophecy and tongues in the NT history. The book ends with an insightful section on the dating, the historicity and the canonization of the NT documents. Finally, the author tackles also with the foundational question of the relation between the Word of God and the Christian scriptures. Exegetical insights, historical background details, theological arguments and philosophical presuppositions, all of these make up a book that will be more than sure much discussed (and debated) in the years to come. This is due (if for no other reason) to the fact that Earl Ellis offers not only well informed and very articulate arguments, but especially because of his original perspective on quite a number of such issues. To mention only two of them, take Ellis' original view on the intermediate state in 2 Cor 5:1-10, and his treatment of the NT doctrine of hell. Such "departures" from the so-called "orthodoxy" (?) place him in a minority (yet growing) camp among those Evangelical scholars who reject the Greek based body-soul dualism as well as the notion of an unending punishment of the unsaved. One needs only to hope that in the near future, professor Ellis will come up with a more refined and popular version of his articles, (and at a more decent price!), so that the fruit of his research will impact not only the scholar but also the interested layperson.

Cezar R Luchian, MA in Religion student, Andrews University Theological Seminary

WOW
Dr. Ellis, research professor of Theology at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, is outstanding in this volume, as he is in all of his books. He has brought more credit back to American theologians. He is well respected in Europe (mostly Germany where he studied) as well he should be. This work is unbelievable. A must for any pastor, preacher, teacher, or general student of the Bible. A word of warning, this is not for the casual reader of the Bible, though some of Dr. Ellis' books are written for lay people, this is not one of them. Have a background in formal theological education (such as Greek, Hebrew, Theology, etc. . .) or have a very good ability to look up words in a dictionary. This book is nothing less than stupendous. If you care at all about academic study of the Word, this book is cheap! You must buy it. Sell any books you have to get it! Also, buy his book "The Making of The New Testament Documents" it is more money, barely, but a good buy too!
